As we hit a big birthday weekend within the Metro DC DJs family, it gets us to thinking about hiring a DJ for a birthday party or birthday celebration. A birthday DJ can face some of the most extreme conditions of any DJ in the business, make sure you hire someone that understands the music celebrating the birthday person.
We’ve all been to birthday parties and have a general idea of how they operate. It shouldn’t seem as difficult and should actually be easier than something like a wedding. And honestly, that’s true, some times.
Whether you hire a birthday DJ or a wedding DJ, they both know how to work with crowds that range in age, however the major difference is most people getting married are between 20 and 40 years of age. Birthday’s, well you have Sweet 16, quincenera, 21st Birthday, 30th, 40th, 50th, etc. While the 16th, quincenera and events such as bar/bat mitzvahs can also qualify as a birthday experience, they tend to have more pomp and circumstance than a 40th, 50th, etc.
The older someone gets, it seems they just want to party more, with a couple of smaller surprises, while the younger events tend to have more giveaways, hand outs, interaction and more. A DJ who only works younger birthdays, may not translate well to the older set as not only are the guests from a different generation, but the music is as well. Talk to the DJ and have your prospect name a few groups from the era, along with song suggestions. You should be prepared to supply the top five or ten songs the birthday person would want to hear. If there are more, that’s fine, but 5-10 gives the DJ a good starting point.
